Trying to make a better robot design and in my opinion the lighting looks better than in the other designs I made.
What I did was to rethink the design. We knew we wanted a robot based on a gorilla, but while I was trying to make it look gorilla-ish it didn’t work. I was told it was OK to just keep the gorilla behaviour. So I started to sketch some robot with heavy armor in front and large arms. Decided to make the eyes hollow, making it feel soulless and evil. Made the hindlegs more like a dog with claws for feet. Paul, our teacher, suggested something in the lines of “monkey-chicken legs like an old man”. What he meant was to keep that part of the robot organic while the rest was mechanic. However that would be too much like a creature from Doom 3, so I decided not to do that.
I made a very simple block model in 3D Studio Max made with boxes, cylinders and spheres. Then I lit it, rendered, and opened it up in PhotoShop.
I made a new layer and started to paint my design over the block model, using the model as a pose and lighting reference.
Added a simple white background with a PhotoShop light. I didn’t complete the painting though.

I absolutely love this! Can I have your permission to use this sketch to make a 3d version of it for my short film. I’m a high school student and have been struggling to create a medium between animal and machine. This is perfect.
