The Return of the Blog Posts

I’m back! I haven’t been good at updating my blog lately, but that’s going to change, starting today.

What have I been doing? Ummm… Err….. I have been making a lot of sketches. Not related to this project. It’s mostly to get better at at drawing… Yes..

This is the most recent render of the robot I’ve been working on:

The model and textures are finished and… The rigging has begun!

There’s not a single bitmap used for textures, which is quite a relief actually. Even though it’s mostly white I added a bit darker gray inside some of the parts and a very dark gray for internal parts.

I was a bit worried about the fact that the robot doesn’t have any shoulders, just a ball joint. Tried to experiment with a render in PhotoShop, just to see if I should add shoulders or not:

Not happy with it, I decided to keep it as it was. Adjusted the size of the shoulder spheres to make them look like they can support the weight.

I’m quite happy with how the model turned out. It looks pretty much like they way I’ve drawn it in the orthographic drawings:

I used the fantastic Symmetry modifier a lot, meaning I didn’t have to measure everything twice and be careful with the vertices. But every 3D-geek knows this.

Here’s a viewport screenshot without TurboSmooth:

The next post wil focus on the rigging of the robot.

Now about the other people in my group.

Jamie has been working on the girl/woman-model, and has already christened it Luna. It’s a very clean and low-poly model. He actually spent some time modeling the eyes, which made the character come alive. I’m however a bit worried about the facial animation though, because I put the nose and mouth that low in the orthographic drawing. I’m sure it will be great!

Aleksander has been creating a cute little bunny and a fluffy render-heavy retarded sheep. I like how the wool turned out, but the computer takes it’s time to process it.

Michael has been working on landscape stuff, based on a teaser trailer for Beyond Good & Evil 2. Starting to look very good.
