Texturing some more…

After some feedback on the robot, with the criticism focusing on how small the robot looks like, I started to work on the textures. This means the rigging post part two will come later.

First I got a bit frustrated, because I’m not really good at making textures i Max, but at least I tried.

I started by adding some dirty textures to the arms and feet, by using a greyscale picture with colored smoke to fill in. I Also added lots of scratches to the paintjob.

Michael came with the suggestion to make the lens have some rainbowy shimmering like THIS.

I experimented with falloff as a reflection-map, with the perpendicular / parallel falloff type. Added two gradient ramps with ‘radial’ as gradient type. After a lot of tweaking I ended up with this:

I’m actually quite happy with the result and I feel it added to the overall character. Thanks Michael!

And finally, I tried to add the falloff to the robot’s paint, which looked kind of funky:
