DC3: Trying to be a bit more original

Last Friday I showed my sketches for the assignment to one of the teachers, and some of the criticism was that my work was too generic (not exact words).

Here is a modified sketch that I just worked on:

I started to think of where it would be cool to see a zombie; a medieval setting, viking setting etc. and ended up with the Roman Empire, which I haven’t seen used too much when making undead.

So what I did was to add legionary armour to the zombie, which I had to google for reference.

I will keep adding more sketches in the next few days, and perhaps scan in some of my sketchbook as well.

Update:

I just remade the dragon head as well. It’s based on a some lizards and crocodiles, to move a bit away from Disney’s dragon design from ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (1959), which has been the basis for a lot of typical fantasy dragons… Just a bit

And a design even further away from the standard fantasy dragon:

This one actually creeps me out a bit. I tried to challenge myself and design a creature a bit different than i usually do… Which seemed to work, so I should probably continue taking small steps out of my comfort zone.

DC3: Sketches for workshop in Drawing & Composition 3 on Friday

We have been given an assignment again. This time we’re supposed to create a picture for each of the letters in the alphabet. Here’s some sketches I just did in Photoshop:

D for Dragon:

F for Femme Fatale (there’s something wrong with this sketch, but I don’t know what it is):

Z for Zombie:

So I hope to get some constructive feedback. I suspect they’ve expected to see more sketches, but I’ve been busy with other things this week.

I’ve just started on three courses over at FXPHD, simply because I didn’t know much about compositing, which is vital to pass the Advanced Visual Effects module here at Teesside.

DC3: Zodiac Rat

An update! Woohoo!!!

I think I started on this about two to three hours ago. Now it’s about 3 AM, and this is supposed to be finished in time for the lecture/lab tomorrow.

The assignment was: Draw a coloured 2D image representing your European star sign or Chinese year sign.”

So I’m both a rat and libra, and wanted to combine them, but meh! Too much work. Got to sleep as well!

I wanted to put the libra sign on the shield, but that’s very time consuming (at least to get it right).

I started out with a line drawing, then shaded it. Made cleaner lines around it, made the shading resemble fur and tried to blend the lines in with the shading. Added colour with a layer set to overlay mode. Tweaked levels. Added texture and more colour via more layers, some set to overlay, some to multiply. Added a spear tip to the staff. Desaturated the overall colour a bit. Flipped the picture horisontally.

And here’s the result:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

I’ve just passed the quarter century mark and I almost forgot that it’s my birthday today. It feels a bit strange being this old, and I change between being indifferent to annoyed to happy to depressed [goto 10];

I have spent a bit over a week here in Middlesbrough, England and am going to start with lectures related to my course this tuesday. I can’t wait to get started really. The first week was slow, and according to the timetable, this week will be slightly similar.

Don’t know if I’ll try to drag some people out to a pub or something, but there MUST be cake of some sort!

Cheers!

CAKE!

Girl - Flattering view

Made another one without watching the tutorial. Finally I can draw girls that don’t look like men! Or someone from The Hills have Eyes

Here it is:
